Contacted Bill Rickard of Rickard Banjos and sent more pictures. He did build this banjo with the neck made by another individual. Therefore he owned this reproduction banjo many many years ago. He mentioned my asking price was reasonable or very good. Additionally he remembers that it has a "really good sounding tone ring". Mr. W Rickard regarding the neck describes it as it was his built by and Decova and that it is a reproduction of a vintage 1907 Vega or 5 String Right hand banjo. So our conclusion was made about the original owner that being Bill Rickard. After removing the neck to looking for the builders signature I find in green ink DeCova along with a number 21516. According to the original owner Wm Rickard it is a reproduction of a 1907 Vega. This is a modern day Tuba Phone which was made by W. A. Rickard and neck by DeCova. Rickard parts used were to make this banjo. What is interesting at least to me is the mother of pearl inlay has been worn down far enough to remove some of the indigo inlay dye. This banjo has a 27.0 inch scale as far as the tuba phone ring Mr. Rickart said it was a real good one. All heavy duty J Hooks and nuts that are provided by the maker that look just like the VEGA days. 27 inch scale neck with Griffin inlay on black ebony on the heel, top of the Vega line inlay on black ebony and 22 frets in very nice shape. The only wear is the mother of pearl very smooth I might add has lost some of its black ink from finger play. I thought it was strange that inlay ink will usually stay on several years. To include what I call the scribe for the ink. Well its old and I have no idea when it was changed out remade or what. Still a nice playing banjo. Action is spot on with no neck twist or neck bow. I play it with two towels inside the pot for a more mellow tone a softer and not as loud. Metal plate with engraved with this name W.A. Rickard. These numbers in green ink found on neck heel 21516 along with the name DeCova. Feel free to call any time. Thanks for looking at this banjo.
