This TB-1 is from the very first regular production lot of one-piece-flange Gibson banjos. As such, it has the "fat" rim and corresponding first-generation one-piece flange. Many of these earliest one-piece flanges have not survived; this one is very pulled up and does have some very small hairline cracks visible on the edge and less so on the face of the flange. Detailed photographs of these are available on request. Normally once one of these early flanges starts to show any cracking, it's history, but I have disassembled this banjo for cleaning, reassembled it, and had the head up to tension for a couple of weeks now and it seems to be structurally stable. Obviously I can make no guarantees about the future of this flange, but many players particularly prize these "fat rim" banjos for the depth, richness, and power they tend to produce and finding one with its original hardware intact is quite difficult. The early pot-metal tension hoops on these banjos have also not survived in many cases; this one shows some flaring but I've seen much worse. Like other banjos from lot #9464, this one has four resonator lugs and no armrest. There's the slightest bit of bulging out of the resonator sidewall in a couple of places. The Grover "first model" tailpiece (minus cover) is a prewar replacement. An older hardshell case is included. Many more photographs are available on request. Please contact me through the Hangout with any questions.
