I recently bought this at an upstate NY estate auction held at a wonderful old house belonging to family that lived there for generations over 100 years. I'm a guitar player and collector but couldn't resist such a gorgeous old fretted instrument. Since I don't really know banjos, I will tell you what I know, put up clear pictures but urge you to call or email any other questions or requests for additional images before buying. I call it a project banjo because of the following:
The B string (Chicago Tuning) original Grover tuner has what I assume is stripped gears. It slips when you turn it.
The fancy celluloid headstock overlay is warped and lifting of the headstock in a few spots.
One of the two thumbwheel nuts that attach the resonator to the banjo has been replaced and is not original.
There is lacquer checking in the finish throughout the resonator, but there are no spots that are lifting.
While the twelfth fret harmonic, closed fret and open string are all in tune to each other to my ear, I believe I'm seeing a slight bow in the neck by sighting down from above the nut.
There is some pitting in the hooks that hold down the skin.
The original (I guess) case is a hot (but repairable) mess some with cracks in the wood and lifting on the covering, but the interior is good and the handle is still attached.
Those are the flaws I can see. The good stuff is it overall looks great, and the three string I can play produce an in tune and very loud sound up and down the neck. Remember, I'm certainly not a luthier and not even a banjo player so my subjective comments should be viewed that way. Thanks for looking.
