1913 Fairbanks tubaphone pot/Fawley conversion neck.
Offering this 1913 Fairbanks tubaphone converted to 5 string. Pot is from a 4 string banjo. Craig (Frailin') Evans commissioned Wyatt Fawley to make a 5 string neck to match the color which turned out dang near perfect. The inlays are based on Whyte Laydie No. 2 and gorgeous to behold. The banjo plays well, the intonation proper, fret wear minimal, and the tone is what you want from a 10 3/4" to10 7/8" (ish) tubaphone. I have been caretaker of this banjo since November 2015 when Craig chose to 'let it circulate'. He and I refer to this banjo as "Griff" for obvious reasons!
**Craig has kindly offered to be reference for the banjo. He mentioned that the neck is what W. Fawley calls "artist grade." I can point serious inquiries to a video link. Please reach out to me for that information. I believe you can reach out to Craig here through the Hangout.
The neck is near mint, the pot in very good condition. Original FB serial number 30***
So... what's my problem?
1. This configuration is just not 'my voice' - I can't explain it any other way.
2. I have more banjos than one soul can honestly play often enough to justify - (please don't ask the actual # ;P).
I hope to post "official measurements" soon. An Access One gig bag is how the banjo came to me and will be included of course. I recently placed a set of medium gauge strings but will include a set of lights with the sale. I will also include the original neck. Pictured strap NOT included.
Griff deserves an owner who will play it and not merely gawk at the inlay (although that is certainly pleasurable!). I don't 'need' to sell this and the asking price is what I paid and what Craig still regards as the value of the instrument.
I will be away from home Aug 19-26. I am at ABC September 6-9 and could deliver there (I'm driving).
