Here is the first prototype model of the new "Zephyr" 12 inch model banjo built by Bob Flesher of Flesher Custom Banjos. Everything is first class on this "Zephyr" meaning warm wind, and is brand new, never been played except by the builder and was completed June 29, 2018. These photos will be the picture details while the sound is a beautiful deep tone with attack. This means the deep toned notes pop out when played as opposed to "mushing" together" into a rumble. Ideal for the Round Peak style. This particular banjo, being the first of it's kind will be on my web sight.
Starting with the neck, it is made of highly figured tiger-tail figured maple with a square non-adjustable steel truss rod under the fingerboard like a Martin Guitar. This rod is epoxied tightly into the wood which will not allow the neck to warp or twist. There also is a flat plate brass plate epoxied into the peghead which will not allow any warping of the peghead. Next, the fingerboard, peghead overlay, heel cap and back of the dowel stick are all of black Gaboon ebony and all have a black/red laminated veneer under them. There is a black/red/black laminated backstrap on the back of the peghead. The fingerboard has a 25.5 inch scale and measures 1 1/4 inches wide at the nut and 2 inches wide with a scoop at the tension hoop. The inlays in the peghead, fingerboard and heel cap are of a delicate, old-time design and made of colorful abalone. The frets are my newly developed "Ever-wear" frets which will never wear. It will never need a fret job. The "Ever-wear" frets are a charcoal gray color which blends into the black finger board better and are not so bright an obtrusive. There is a 5th string capo spike installed at the 7th fret. The neck is furnished with five geared Goto antique brass tuners with ebony wood buttons.
The 12 inch diameter rim is made of hard rock maple with a tiger tail maple veneer on the inside and outside to match the neck. It is 3 inches deep with a 1/4 inch diameter brass tonering fitted into a tight wedged groove on the top of the rim. This tight fit brings the wood rim into the total tone of the rim. The bottom of the rim has an ebony rim cap with a strip of black and red rope pattern. We use square wooden dowel sticks on all our banjos rather than round coordinator rods. This is the old-time traditional way to build a banjo. The dowel stick is made of tiger-tail maple with a black/red/black ebony back strap which is inlaid with the makers name in mother of pearl and abalone to match the fingerboard. All metal hardware are made of antique colored brass. It comes with a "Renaissance" style mylar head but a calfskin or goat skin head can be mounted for an additional $100.00.
