For the person with a feel for history, here’s a unique opportunity to acquire the first banjo completed by the legendary Liberty Banjo Company of Bridgeport, CT. Jim DeCava, who built this instrument in 1976, has identified it as a custom job for his friend Russ Root, a “full-fledged American Indian” in his words. This is the connection to the eagle motif on the peg head and the resonator. The resonator motif is lightly carved into the wood and then stained – quite a masterpiece! Jim also confirmed that a B&D tone ring is fitted: the power and tone it delivers is wonderful. He now operates his own banjo and guitar business in Ansonia, CT.
So it’s quite special: the first Liberty built, a custom job and it’s a plectrum banjo (the majority of Liberty production was 5-string instruments). There’s a 23rd fret with a full blank MOP inlay if you want to personalise.
The pictures tell the story. All visible metal surfaces (with the exception of the hook brackets) are gold plated. I haven’t polished it lately but the armrest is the only part that looks a bit ordinary. Everything is in very good condition. There is no wear on the frets, no buckle rash on the resonator, no nuthin’. The neck is dead straight and fully adjustable.
The case is solid and virtually unmarked, with deep plush lining. I’m also including a Richelieu pick holder and a robust leather strap with little sleeves that prevent wear on the resonator edges.
I’ve kept the banjo in its case at all times in an environment free of children, pets and smoke.
My period as the custodian has been about 10 years and in that time it has had very little work (but always a pleasure to play). Age is no longer on my side so it’s time for someone else to have the pleasure of ownership.
Please ask questions and request more pictures if that’s what you need.
