For sale is a 1925 Gibson TB3 Mastertone conversion done by Bill Sullivan. 1925 was this first year that Gibson released the Mastertone model, and the only year that the word "Mastertone" is on the headstock rather than your standard Mastertone block in the years that followed.
This banjo pot is 100% factory original with the exception of a replaced PW Grover Presto which is 100% period correct for this model. The original ball bearing tone ring and the nearly 100 year old wood give this banjo a sweet dry tone that I really enjoy. These ball bearing banjos have been getting the attention they deserve, and for good reason - they sound great and are fun to play.
The resonator is in fantastic shape for a banjo approaching the century mark. The finish is all original and besides having some checking and some light surface scratching, it still has a shine. The neck and resonator color are both a deep "ox blood" color and are matched well.
The neck was made by Bill Sullivan and has a very nice playing profile. I would say it's slightly larger than a pre-war 5, and very comfortable. There are a few capo marks that I captured in the pictures. The tuners are modern 5-Star Planets. The truss rod cover is also prewar Gibson (philips head screws for the cover are not pre-war).
I bought this banjo over 10 years ago at Turtle Hill in MD. I am charging less than what I paid for the banjo. I am selling to feed the banjo monkey. I am open to reasonable offers.
