This is a very cool mid-30's May Bell Tenor Banjo... and it's in excellent shape. This banjo has a very cool blue "mother of toiletseat (MOT)" veneer that is very reminiscent of the 1930's Gibson Style 11. I could not capture the vibrant blue color, but it is (nice and rich). there are no signs of delimitation anywhere .
The calf skin head is in great shape and could potentially be mounted on an expensive PW Gibson (it's very difficult to find PW skin that has not be stretched over an achtop ring, or is not completely shot). The frets are in great shape too. I am guessing the owner did not play this banjo much at all.
The banjos comes with an original Geib tenor case, that is functional, but it certainly has some wear, some of the tolex is flaking, etc. But... for $250 to get a 1930s banjo in this shape with a Gieb hardshell case is a really good buy.
This would be a killer tenor to mess around on, or possibly an inexpensive conversion for someone who wanted to make a neck. The tuners and tailpiece are modern.
