SPECTACULAR SOUNDING VINTAGE GOLDSTAR JD CROWE G20JD S# 84 3. 04 Excellent Condition 1984
I bought this amazing banjo from the former manager of the fifth string music store in San Francisco. He has several prewar original flathead Gibson five strings. He had matching pot metal gold plated tension hoop and flange made for this banjo and the original is pictured separately and is included. He is a setup genius and It sounds like a prewar Granada flathead all day long. Simply astounding. I’ve had them all over the last 40 years and the JD Crowe Goldstar is as close as you’re gonna get to a pre-war Granada.
This is a very very special banjo. I purchased this from the former manager of the fifth string banjo shop in San Francisco. He bought it new in 1984. In addition to being a phenomenal player, he is also a major aficionado of prewar Gibson banjos and owns two original five strings. He had a custom-made flange and tension hoop made out of pot metal and gold plated to more closely conform to an original pre-war Granada. The original flange and tension hoop is included and pictured herein. He set up this banjo to sound as close as possible to his original pre-war Granada and I kid you not, he swears they sound virtually identical. Having heard both, I agree whole heartedly. It is uncanny how he did, and it is in no small part due to the pot metal flange and tension hoop coupled with the innate construction of these legendary banjos made in 1981 and 1984. They have a cult following for good reason, as many believe there has never been a better replica of an original pre-war Gibson Granada Flat Head, at any price, bar none. OHSC
