Upcycle: To reuse discarded objects or materials in such a way to create a product of higher quality and value than the original. I used various vintage used parts and a new Golden Gate neck to put this banjo together. The banjo plays easy, notes true up and down the neck and sounds old timey. You can hear this banjo being played by me in the clawhammer style by going to my BHO music archive and clicking on "Ducks on the Millpond".
The 10 3/4” rim on this banjo is known as "double spunover" which means that metal is clad over a wooden rim on both sides. The rim assemble itself weighs in at approximately 4lbs. This rim most likely dates from the early 20th century. The tension hoop, L shoes, hooks and nuts are all vintage and come various sources and are not original to rim. There is some tarnish, dings and scratches on some of the metal parts. New parts include the calf skin head, hex lugs, tailpiece, 1/2 inch bridge and light gauge strings.
The neck has 4 vintage friction tuners on the peghead and a new friction 5th tuner. Width of the neck at the nut is 1 3/16”
The vintage tuners came from an old 1920's tenor banjo. They work well and the banjo stays in tune. Neck to pot fit is tight and secure. The string action is 3mm above the 12th fret. Scale is the standard 26 1/4”. The banjo weighs in at just over 6 lbs.
