#9464-79 is from the first known lot of one-piece-flange TB-1s. As such, it has the highly sought-after "fat rim" with a thickness of .640" and the more lightly-built first-generation cast flange. The flange has pulled up as is almost always the case with these earliest one-piece flanges, but appears to be completely stable and is free of any cracks. The original pot metal tension hoop shows some flaring but is also stable and crack-free.

This TB-1 remains in original condition with the exception of a resonator which has been refinished with more of a matte finish and now has a slightly lighter color, revealing more figure in the maple than that normally seen on style 1 banjos. There are two patched holes in the rim which probably accommodated wiring for lights mounted in the head (the holes were patched from the outside and are still partially open from the inside). The rim also features an added outer strip of very thin maple, a factory modification which has been observed on some other examples and was apparently intended to provide a tighter fight of the flange to the rim. Unlike most style 1 banjos, #9464-79 features four resonator lugs rather than three. Another nice bonus is that unlike most style 1 banjos which were equipped with the Grover "first model" or "window" tailpiece, this example features a Grover Presto. The armrest is two-piece with some loss of plating. This banjo came to me in an inexpensive semi-hardshell case but will be shipped in a prewar tenor case.
