Henry Dobson Banjo with a date of 1881 on it, which is the patented date, but it was made at a later period period, guessing early 1920s. The brass plating on the side of the banjo reads HC Dobsons Pat Nov 8 1881. There is a wood square rod that goes across the back of the banjo below the surface. Impressed into it reads on one side Henry C Dobson & Son Makers New York USA and on the other side it reads Dobson's PAT MAY 14th 1878 Nov 8th 1881. I am not a player or expert in these instruments, so I doubt I will be able to answer detailed questions. I purchased the banjo at a yard sale approximately in 1993 in Chevy Chase, MD. It has not been played since then (or before), not have I done any work on it or attempted to string it. There are a few minor scratches, but as far as I can tell no major damage. One of the knobs looks to have a crack on it and may have been glued. The detailed photos accompany this post and I am happy to take additional photos if you have questions.
