I personally constructed and turned this 11" Cherry-Walnut block style banjo pot custom fit a B1171 Gold Tone 18 hole tone ring about 6 years ago not knowing what the sound would turn out be like. So I talked with Tony Pass and he gave me specific notes on how to lathe-turn and set the rim up for the best possible sound using the (B1171) Gold Tone ring. Following his instructions I put my custom made black cherry neck on the pot and strung it up.
I took it to the annual Dulcimer Festival here in Michigan and let a few of the hot players try it out. Wow--one guy offered me $1,200. it with no case. (I had it in a guitar case at the time) He adjusted it a little and played it for over a 1/2 hour and gave me his cell-phone number if I ever wanted to sell it. Had the banjo appraised at Elderly about 4 years back at $1,650 no case. Well, here is the pot for sale 6 years later. It has a great sound! Lots of bite and up the neck bell ringing volume! (thanks to Tony Pass' expertise specs.)
Here are the details:
RIM:
Block Black Cherry/w Old Growth Walnut top tier--great harmonic tap tone!
Lathe-turned for a one-piece Gibson style flange.
All holes drilled for rim rods at 1 5/16" centers
Rim heighth 2 1/16" 11" diameter.
Perfect slip-fit match with special skirt to rim specifications by Tony Pass. Makes it ring out nice! Sits flat on the inside toe all the way around--NO gaps!
Finished with famous Birchwood Casey TRU-OIL.
Is in great shape with moderate wear around the rim rod washers, neck attachement, and tailpiece areas.
GOLD TONE TONE RING
Specs:
11" Model # (B1171N) Brass Tone Ring
This ring has a heavier skirt than typical Gibson, Dannick and Huber.
Skirt height, 1 3/16"
The inner toe to outer skirt width, 1 13/16"
Weighs in at 3lbs. 2 oz. (nickel plate)
Light skirt wear from head tensioning -- NO dents or "wobble".
It was a great banjo and the pot made it have that pre-Gulf war sound (ha ha!). Making a "woody" Walnut banjo with a removable granadillo tone ring, so I need the cash to buy some more wood. Hope you can help me out!
Thanks for looking!
