Baldwin with some of Ogsbury's original Ode parts, a bit before Baldwin took the shop to Arkansas. Banjoshrink.com calls this several years of production the second best banjos ever built....first are the archtop Gibsons, second this approximately 3 year run of the Baldwins right after Ogsbury sold out, the third is the next run of Baldwin/Ode banjos. (Thank you Ed Britt and Myron Koenig for clearing up some dates and information.)
Gold plating is almost gone except on the Ode tailpiece, so mostly nickel now shows. Banjo has a few dings and scratches, one small one goes thru the finish and marks the wood. Every ding or chip that photographed is included in the pictures. Hard shell case. Of course very good sound, I now understand why Bobby Thompson played a Baldwin. I consider this in VERY GOOD condition, but downgraded it to GOOD, for anybody who doesn't like any dings or scratches, because the gold plating is almost gone, and there is the usual tarnish on the nickel. Snuffy Smith III bridge presently on it. . Serial number 738, made in early 1968, one of the last six Style D's made in Colorado. Original armrest was not on the banjo when I bought it, I put a Nechville armrest on. Must have had an pickup on it, as a 3/4 inch wide channel less than 1/4 inch deep has been carved out of the inside of the side of the resonator to let wires through. You cannot see this when resonator is on. I assume a set of very small holes on side of neck are from a Schub capo. Someone has at one time had the banjo miked and carved a small place for the chord to rest (or whatever it does) into the inside of the side of the resonator. Flange entirely covers this up so cannot be scene. Last pic (just added) is of this.
Thanks everybody who chimed in on the Baldwin Yahoo group to help me get the information on this banjo correct...last correction was the date...1968. I had a suggestion that the tail piece is not the same one that went with the banjo. Perhaps that explains the gold being more prevalent only there. With the information I have received and what I know of the banjo all is original except the armrest and probably the tail piece. Little fret wear, so I assume it has been re-fretted.
