For sale is the only 6-string open-back banjo finished by my father. It’s built with high-quality Rickard hardware and a Tubaphone tone ring setup, making it a very powerful and responsive open-back with excellent clarity and volume.
The rim is a 12" OD x 3¼" deep maple block rim with an ebony endcap, fitted with a Rickard brass 12" Tubaphone tone ring. It features a scalloped brass Rickard tension hoop and a matching Rickard brass bracket band, fitted with 26 Rickard brass shoes, hooks, and nuts.
The two-piece figured maple neck is fitted with EVO medium gold frets, a bone nut and pip, pearl dot fingerboard inlays, and a scooped thumb shelf for the fifth string.
The banjo is finished in a satin oil-varnish, which really brings out the figure in the maple. The peghead features a custom-designed and engraved gold mother-of-pearl inlay by Dad.
Additional hardware and setup details include a Rickard 6-string No-Knot tailpiece, Rickard Cyclone 10:1 tuners with a Gotoh fifth-string tuner, a high-crown Renaissance head, and a Scorpion bridge.
This banjo is a strong, articulate open-back with excellent projection and clarity, while still retaining the warmth and character associated with a Tubaphone setup. This banjo was initially started by master builder Dave Large for Jimmy McCown.
