Lonnie Hoppers was an active Missouri banjo player and member of Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys from September 1962 until January the following year. Lonnie passed away last October aged 89. Lonnie’s daughter has requested I place this banjo for sale here. Lonnie performed with this banjo extensively since 1970 for gigs and recordings including his 15 year tenure performing daily at Silver Dollar City Branson Missouri.
The banjo is a TB3 1927 Gibson serial #8834-48 no hole archtop, with a two piece flange, converted to five string by Kansas City MO luthier the late Bob George in 1970, he installed a Gibson mahogany RB250 neck. The original tenor neck and tuners will come with the banjo. All parts of the pot assembly are original except for the head and the tension hoop (hoop has plating wear) which has the wider opening for a five string neck. The resonator is colored with the original ox blood stain. There are flaws from age in the lacquer finish on the rear of the resonator. The Grover Presto tailpiece has been repaired and modified at some point in it’s history and is fine. Check the photos for frets, fingerboard and general condition. The banjo comes with it’s case which I estimate is also from the 1970’s.
