I picked up this fiddle a while back with the intention of learning to fiddle a few tunes, but some things have come up and I'm in need of cash. I have about 200 bucks in it, so that's what I'm asking. I'd just like to get what I have in it back.
This fiddle was made in the 1920's or 30's by the Jackson-Gulden Co. of Columbus Ohio. They were produced for students but have a reputation for "sounding better than they ought to." Seems a better instrument than most Chinese student models. This has standard appointments for a student fiddle, maple back without a lot of flame, spruce top, all solid wood from what I can tell. There is an original decal on the back stating "First National Institute of Violin."
One of the pegs is not original, but is a decent match. There is a little finish damage to back of the pegbox, but this is only cosmetic. One corner is chipped, though only a little. Shortly after I bought this it was set up by friend of mine who's a student in lutherie. He reshaped the feet on the bridge, doped the pegs and installed the fine tuners. I redyed the fingerboard (it appears to be dyed maple and the dye had worn off). This is a very nice set up, and while this isn't the nicest fiddle I've ever played, it is definitely one of the easiest playing ones I've had in my hand - very low action. In the photos you will notice some "frets" on the fingerboard. These are just pencil and will wipe right off.... like i said I was trying to learn to fiddle.
I do not have a case for it, but I will double box it when I ship. I will slack the strings before shipping and wrap the bridge and tailpiece up. Hopefully the sound post will stay in place, but it's always a gamble. Due to it's age I'm selling as-is (although it feels solid and I've had it in both standard and AEAE tuning and it's taken it just fine). If you're interested, send me a PM.
