This is a superb banjo the appears to be something of a joint effort of some of the best craftsman in the resonator banjo world. The mahogany neck and likely resonator are from Frank Neat’s work shop, the three ply maple rim is a Sullivan Historic Growth, and the unplated bronze tonering is a highly desirable Baylock.
The mahogany neck has what appears to be a Brazilian rosewood fretboard inlayed with the hearts and flowers pattern. The “mastertone “ block reads “Just Perfect,” which I was told was the verbal reaction the original owner’s spouse made when told about the upcoming banjo purchase. Could be nonsense, but quality lore nonetheless.
The extremely hard to photograph resonator was likely also made by the Neat workshop, though I cannot 100% confirm that. It’s constructed of very striking curly mahogany and is probably the most visually compelling resonator I’ve ever owned. There is a ding the size of an M&M on the bass side of the resonator, but otherwise it’s quite clean.
The Baylock tonering lives up to the hype. This banjo has a nice dry rumble to its tone that has kept it in continual rotation since I acquired it.
The nickel plated hardware, save for the modern presto tailpiece I just put on there, is curiously worn. The plating has worn off on top of the tension hoop in roughly the 11 o clock position, and there’s plenty of other signs of worn plating, dings, and scrapes on the tension hoop, hooks and nuts, and flange.
The tuners are brand new Gotohs, which I’ve determined to be my favorite tuners available.
I had a hard time getting the lighting to cooperate taking a picture of the back of the instrument. I will try again shortly, and please let me know if you have any specific pictures you’d like.
The banjo ships at cost in a new Superior hard shell.
