This is a Fairbanks Special Electric banjeaurine, restored to its glorious original sound with original parts. The scalloped "electric" tone ring produces one of the sought-after, classic sounds. (It's also what's featured on Fairbanks Whyte Laydies.) It has a 10 3/4" head and a 21" scale, typically tuned a fourth higher than standard. It is 30" overall.
The pot (serial number 18664 from ~1898) is all original and is in excellent condition. The neck serial number is 825 earlier, and it required some serious work. The original fret board was salvaged. Its original frets were dressed a long time ago, and tiny wear is visible on the first two (but not noticeable when playing). The mahogany neck was leveled. The original thin decorative laminations under the fret board were replaced by single 1/8" padauk, and the tuning head face-plate and heel cap were replaced with new ebony. The heel crack was glued (and hasn't moved a bit in fifteen years), and the whole neck was refinished, ending up perfectly straight and square.
The restoration retains the handsome, original Special inlays and delivers the original, wonderful, bright electric sound.
Included is the period-appropriate hard-shell case, restored with new hinges, reinforcements, and handle grip.
