Last year, I built my first two fiddles: an ash cornerless, and this one made from a bottle gourd.
Since I decided on a wooden top instead of skin, I was able to add a bass bar and sound post, and given the dowel construction and light-tension strings, I was hoping it could withstand being tuned up to standard pitch, in which case I was able to achieve that without issue. While this fiddle has some volume, it’s not super loud, but as I’ve played it some, it makes it nice for playing later at night or for practicing. It has a sweet, timid voice, a bit airy as I’ve heard other gourd fiddles sound, but maybe not as much given the wooden top as opposed to skin.
Specs:
• two-piece curly maple neck, maple dowel (it and the heel are glued in place to the gourd)
• walnut fingerboard with underlay of mahogany and walnut
• standard 13” (4/4) scale length
• 1” nut width, strings spaced a 1/4” string to string
• 10” long x 7” wide small bottle gourd body with 3/32” spruce top and 1/8” maple back, 2 1/2” overall height at the tail end
• 7/8” maple bridge, with strings being spaced 1/2” string to string on a fairly standard arch
• string height is roughly 1/16” on the E and just under an 1/8” on the G, so fairly low
• strung with light tension D’Addario Preludes, tuned to standard pitch
• simple slotted peghead with walnut overlay and geared tuners
• walnut tailpiece with ebony fret
• ebony nut, tailgut saddle, and button/endpin, the latter secured with a screw
• Gourd body is stained and finished with lacquer along with the neck and tailpiece. Fingerboard is oiled.
With this sale, I am including a lightly used 4/4 Howard Core case (which I bought new and only used on two brief outings) to ship it in along with a new, unused/un-rosined 4/4 bow. I have made a foam insert so it’s snug in the case. Case comes with detachable shoulder straps which I have not used.
A couple videos of me playing it with gourd banjo (or, I can send a sound sample along — just ask):
