I purchased this banjo new from Elderly in 2018, and I’ve played and loved it over the years. There’s a picture on my Facebook page of me playing it at a church fundraiser. Somewhere in my posts, there’s an iPhone video of that performance.
Specs:
• 11” bent rim made of walnut
• Dobson tone ring
• 3-piece walnut neck with Dobson heel
• Cottonwood peghead shape, figured maple overlay
• PegHeds micro-gear planetary tuners (They look like ebony friction pegs but function like modern, geared tuners.)
• Ebony fingerboard (1.40” nut width, 25-1/2" scale) with long Texas scoop and offset abalone dots
• Aged brass hardware
• Renaissance head
• No-Knot tailpiece
• Satin oil varnish finish
• Serial number 755 stamped inside rim and dowel stick
• Superior hardshell case
What makes this banjo special:
All walnut construction - the wood and finish color of the neck and pot match
The aged brass hardware. (No fingerprints to worry about!) I read that Chuck’s secret formula was to dip the raw brass parts in vinegar and then leave them out in the hot Texas sun.
The side grooves in the tension hoop are a real comfort. No hook indentations in your arms and legs after long sessions!
The iridescent abalone dots are eye catching!
A banjo with an understated beauty and a warm, but focused sound. Only selling to fund — yup, you guessed it— another Chuck Lee banjo.
