For sale, something you don't see for sale very often, A prewar style 5 Gibson conversion. The pot assembly is, as far as I know and can tell, totally original. It is still a 40 hole archtop, the rim has not been cut. Tailpiece, tailpiece hanger bracket, armrest, hooks and nuts, tension hoop, two piece flange, tone ring, cood rods and associated hardware, L brackets and thumbscrews, are all the original prewar parts. The rim is also original. The neck origin is unknown as far as who built it, but is a very decent reproduction style 5 neck - it is walnut, with a rosewood board, with hearts and flowers inlays instead of the usual wreath inlays, bone nuts, the proper "greenish" pearloid binding and style 5 purfling, the "flower pot" on the reverse side, with fiddle cut peghead. The resonator is in very good condition but does have quite a bit of finish checking and small dings or scratches, as one might expect from a nearly 100 year old banjo. It does have "Mastertone" on the peghead as a 1925 ball bearing style would have, although this banjo appears to be a late 1928 to early 1930 (So we'll say 1929 as a good medium!) Obviously NOT a ball bearing pot assembly, nor the early "no hole" archtop type tone ring as used in 1927 and 1928. An interesting point about the banjo is the Guarantee decal is on the opposite side from usual. The frets are in very good shape and have a lot of life left in them. There is one 5th string spike at A. The tuners are prewar "pat pending Planet" tuners, as most style 5's did use these, with Pearl buttons. The Head appears to be a Pre EPA remo, and it has a standard 5/8" bridge, most likely Grover but is unmarked. The banjo does come with a reproduction "Red Line" case. I have seen these banjos recently priced in the 12 thousand and up range - So I feel this is a very fine deal. This banjo does not belong to me but belongs to the estate of a friend who passed away several years ago and I am helping the family to get rid of. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll be glad to answer as best I can. If any additional photos or info are needed fire me an email OR call one of the numbers shown below, (cell phone probably is best) Thanks for looking!
