UPDATE 3/17/2025: Blanks 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 - 16 SOLD
4 and 7 are left!
Over the last few years, I've always been on the hunt for excellent examples of Honduran Mahogany and Brazilian Rosewood for banjo neck building. I will comb through estate sales, lumber yard liquidations, and the good old interwebz to see what I can scrounge.
In June, a friend and I traveled to a lumberyard that was downsizing and moving that had scores of Honduran mahogany that was harvested in 1993 from trees 100+ years old at the time. The proprietor of the shop had traveled to the rainforest to show local artisans how to best utilize a whole tree, rather than just build one canoe from a giant mahogany tree... and waste so much good wood.
In his travels, he would bring back wood to use for furniture, mainly specialty chairs for musicians of all things. When liquidating his stock to move and downsize, we called and asked what he might have that would fit in the dimensions needed for neck blanks.
Well, we took a haul of wood to Frank and Ricky Neat who cut the billets into blanks for me and are willing to offer up a special price for anyone who would like to purchase a blank from me. Frank has said this is among the nicest mahogany he has seen in the decades he has been building necks, and some blanks have some figure to them that, when polished, should be visually striking and sound phenomenal.
I am selling the blanks for $125 a piece.
Upon purchase you can:
1. Have the Neats build you a neck, they supply the Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, for $1600. Total for you is $1725 ($1600 to Neat, $125 to me).
2. Have the Neats build you a neck, you also supply the fingerboard from your own supply, for $1500. Total for you is $1625 ($1500 to Neat, $125 to me).
3. You can have the blank shipped to you and set aside for yourself one day, add $25 for postage per blank ($125/blank plus the shipping).
If you choose to have a neck built, you'll save some coin over they charge for a Honduran/Brazilian neck and get a boutique, hand selected piece with a nice back story! Currently, the Neats are charging $1800 for a mahogany neck with Brazilian rosewood.
Thanks for looking and happy picking!
