Update: I was informed by a fellow collector that this banjo is one number off of Ron Stewarts old TB1 conversion that he played for years until 2006! Ron's banjo was 9464-59, and this one is - 58!
Up for grabs is an EXCELLENT 1929 Style TB1 Gibson banjo. I purchased this from Greg Earnest some time ago, had the intention of converting it to a five string and leaving as a hoop but am moving in a different direction.
Factory order number is 9464-58, making this a "fat boy" style rim and it retains the ORIGINAL one piece flange! These early style 1s also shipped with 4 resonator lugs but... only 3 thumbscrews... hence why one appears "missing" in the photos but this was common at this period of Gibson manufacturing.
Banjo is being sold as is. All parts are original, and as listed.
- Original pot assembly with hoop and hide head. All metal parts are in good condition with some zinc pest in places. Flange is relatively flat and all parts are structurally sound.
- Of note, the armrest is unique. It is a period correct factory option with an interesting mounting system! Unique but not unheard of feature.
- Original finish for all wood parts with decent play wear.
- Original tenor case comes with the banjo and is in fair condition. This banjo was played but taken care of.
I do have two PB1 necks being converted to 5 strings by John Boulding. One was intended for this banjo and if someone is interested, I am happy to discuss selling one of those so that someone can convert this to a 5 and have a fairly close representation of an original RB1.
