Up for grabs is a STUNNING, 1929 Gibson TB3 banjo in excellent plus condition. Find one cleaner that can deliver all of the goods in terms of tone and collectability!
Factory order number 9488-99, making this a coveted "fat boy" rim configuration WITH THE ORIGINAL FLANGE.
I purchased this particular instrument at SPBGMA last year as a tenor with the intent to have an uncut (no full flathead ring) in my arsenal. Frank and Ricky Neat built an excellent 5 string neck for me with rosewood I sourced and mahogany from the stash they had accrued over the years for necks that JD Crowe might order.
This particular example sounds excellent as an archtop and I toyed with the idea of putting a conversion ring in it but, I didn't think it needed one honestly.
Banjo is being sold as is. All parts are original, and as listed.
- Original pot assembly with 40 hole archtop ring and original hooks, nuts, tension hoop, and flange. Tension hoop does feature some zinc pest but is structurally sound.
- Original finish for all wood parts.
- Original tenor neck, tenor case, and hide head come with the banjo and are in excellent shape.
- Frank Neat conversion mahogany neck (high grade Brazilian rosewood with coveted honduran mahogany).
See pictures as they speak for themselves. Sound clips can be provided for serious inquiries.
I also have some awesome documented history on the banjo that came from the gentleman who found this in Texas for whoever buys it. In short, it was a "one owner family" banjo that sat under a bed for decades. The original owner played in a banjo band in none other than Kalamazoo, Michigan!
$12,000 takes the converted banjo, tenor neck/case, and a Canadian calton I've kept it in (also pictured). Shipping and pick up to be discussed (I have shipped two other fat rim banjos over the years and am happy to do so again). No trades. Willing to discuss selling as just a tenor, or without the calton case if the buyer is serious.
Thanks for looking and happy picking!
