I "rescued" this gem eight years ago from Kendall Morse, a local (Maine) folk singer who has since passed and had owned it for 15-20 years. It was in pretty sad shape, having been butchered as far back as the mid-60's. I sent it to Smakula Fretted Instruments, where Andy did a stellar job of restoration, which I described in a previous post a few years ago. He removed and replaced the peghead overlay, somehow salvaging and reusing the original inlays, which I find remarkable. He also straightened the neck, installed new frets, and reset the dowel stick. I installed new Gotoh tuners, purchased from Smakula. The 28 open-end bracket nuts are original, as are 4 of the brackets, but the other 24 were purchased new from Bill Rickard. Prior to shipping the banjo to Smakula, I removed the ugly brown paint on the neck that someone had applied years ago. When the banjo was returned, I applied several coats of spray shellac which I had purchased from StewMac, giving it a satin finish. The nut is 1 7/32", and head diameter is 10 15/16". Serial #76xxx is matched on both dowel stick and inside of pot. I'm including a premium, arch-top TKL open-back ca se (either black or the tweed case pictured. Other than the color, they are identical) that I purchased about 15 years ago. Local pickup only (Boston MA to Portland ME ). The banjo needs to be held and played by a prospective buyer. The 1 3/16" nut could be a deal breaker for some people.
