The Deering Sierra openback banjo (2023) is a uniquely versatile instrument that will hold its own in any old-time session or bluegrass jam. This is owing to the fact that the tone chamber (pot) is built using a rim made of violin grade maple combined with the highly regarded Deering 06 - 20 hole bell bronze flathead tone ring, the one used in most Deering professional grade bluegrass banjos.
The combination produces a sparkling and powerful sound! And by eliminating the heavy flange and resonator, the Sierra openback offers a voice very much in the spirit of the famed Vega #2 Tubaphone at a far lower price.
The banjo was ordered directly from the Deering shop and was professionally setup by expert banjo luthier, Richie Dotson. He reset the action, installed a 5th string pip (nut) along with spikes at the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th frets and chose a custom Dotson bridge to bring out the fullest tone possible.
This banjo also comes with a Tone-Gard, to enhance volume and project sound, and includes a Deering hardshell case.
