For sale is a banjo that you don't see offered for sale very often. This is one of the holy grail 1981 Gold Star JD Crowe finished in burnished gold. These banjos were made in Hamamatsu Japan in two batches of 20 units and one batch of 40 units (80 total banjos for 1981)
This is the first time this banjo has been offered for sale publicly in 43 years. It was originally purchased by Italian banjo player and craftsman Silvio Ferretti. He then sold it to a friend who placed it under a bed for the next 3 decades in Naples Italy. Silvio then helped the banjo come to the States and to it's next caretaker Matthew Tessier via a stop at my house in Nashville.
While I had the banjo I took the time to fix the delamination in the rim that all of these banjos are none to have issues with. I slowly wicked 5 bottles of super glue into the voids of the rim just like Chris Cioffi did to my Crowe 81005 and I later did to Crowe 81003. At that time Casey Sullivan also replaced all the frets in the neck and leveled the brazilian board. Dean Meece also went through the original tuners and fully serviced them and got them working like a million bucks. There are a few small dings in the resonator, a mark on the top lip of the reso.
The only non original piece of gold on the banjo is the tailpiece. The original was separated from the banjo years ago and I installed the correct style GS presto and had Steve Huber gold plate it for me. The banjo has also received a fresh neck set for a 5/8th bridge and has nice butter smooth action.
I recently acquired this banjo from Matt and I'm only selling it because my wife and I are buying our first home. This banjo is killer and being sold as is in a equally clean original Guardian hardshell case with crushed blue velvet interior.
Thank you for looking.
