These brass hoop equipped Gibson RB banjos are an interesting footnote of recent Gibson Banjo history. They are the only modern Gibson banjo to be had for under $2000 and they are much more gentle on your shoulder and back.
This particular example is satin oxblood finished maple with nickel hardware. There’s minimal frerware and only slight scratches and dings on the wood. The hardware didn’t age as gracefully, as it has light pitting and discoloration even after cleaning. I think it looks cool personally but it is certainly not an immaculate example of this model.
Any potential buyer should be aware this instrument came from a smoking house. I have thoroughly cleaned and aired out this banjo, and it has minimal if any residual odors. The original Gibson branded case has taken longer to get remedied, though I have been leaving it in the sun on nice days and placing dryer sheets inside at night. It’s certainly making progress and doing much better than the Martin D-28 I got from the same seller.
Also, based on information I’ve read, there’s no precise way to get the year on a RB model unless you have the paperwork. If anyone can pinpoint the year of manufacture of this, I’d sure appreciate it.
Thanks for reading and feel free to reach out with any questions.
