This is an interesting piece. I can't determine exact model (1 or 2), Doc Fossey 5 string. I found a couple that were sold on another site a couple years back for reference, I listed his description below as it accurately identifies this one.
A unique instrument for sure- a guitar with a banjo neck! It's made by the Doc Fossey company. I was looking for banjo/alternative instruments and found this lovely, remarkably well-built, and great sounding instrument. When the seller talked to Bruce Fossey on the phone he said that he developed this as a way to pursue guitar approaches with a banjo set-up (and be able to play a rich, warm sound instead of the banjo's bright, loud sound).
Guitar body measuring 16 3/16” in width, 4 ¾” in depth at the bottom side, having a long scale length of 25.5” nut to saddle and a double cutaway, two-point body, dressed entirely in natural Engelmann spruce and East Indian rosewood, having brown-maple-brown wood purflings on all borders and edges, and abalone pearl border around the face, the soundhole, the headstock and the backstripe. This generously sized guitar body is connected to a comfortable, nicely inlaid 5-string banjo neck, one that features prewar type crests, floral settings and flourishes in abalone in 8 fret positions. The tapered headstock is elegant surrounded in wide, colorful abalone that spells out “doc” at the top horizontal in lower case, and “fossey” down the center, vertically, in what appears to be polished ebony. Headstock tuners are high quality Gotoh, gold plated, with pearloid buttons and the unsigned geared fifth peg on the bass side of the neck is similarly gold plated. The rectangular ebony bridge has a distinct, carved pyramid on each side and a raised rectangular plateau at the center, with a bone drop-in saddle. The nut is similarly made from (possibly) excessed [cow] femur. Here’s what the Good Doctor says: “Hand-made, quality construction, with a toneboard of Engelmann or Sitka, full sized small-jumbo body, solid hardwoods, Indian rosewood back and sides, abalone trim and inlays – plays like a 5-string banjo; sounds different; sounds great! Broaden your musical horizons with the [lower case] doc fossey guitar.” The workmanship is excellent. Brand new (if you could find one) it costs $1600, so this is a very good price.
This is from my father's estate and am happy to provide more photos or information as needed. A new Road Runner soft case is included. Thank you for your interest.
