Vega made so many banjos in 1923 and this is one of them. This one is a particularly nice example of the fine craftsmanship and material the venerable company was known for at the time. Unfortunately, some time in the past 100 years, a series of unfortunate accidents and repairs happened to the peghead, which means this banjo can be had for much less than typical retail and would be a perfect candidate for a five string conversion project.
We’ll start with what’s good about this banjo: it has a desirable 11-13/16” rim equipped with a Tubaphone tonering. The hardware has fared pretty well with minimal oxidation, tarnish, or pitting. The original Rodgers skin head is intact.
The neck is made of some of the most striking curly maple under a gorgeous original amber hued finish. It has an ebony 17 fret fingerboard with moderate wear on the frets. Unfortunately, one of the ears on the peghead broke off years ago and was reattached with a screw and a nail. Two additional holes were then drilled into the peghead to accommodate alternative tuner placement. It’s unfortunate, but I’d rather that the previous owner do this funky repair than to have thrown the whole thing out.
