I purchased this Wiplstix Fiddle in April 2020.
By then, we had moved back north to Reston, VA. After living in a log cabin in the Shenandoah Valley for the first six years of my retirement, I was preparing myself for the reality that apartment living back in the Big City would require a bit of deft management of playing times.
So, I was looking for something in the way of a fiddle that would not wake up the Reston community.
“WhippleBill” built these through 2020 or so, and then announced on his website that he would be taking a break from producing these fiddles.

In March 2023 he returned to the work of building these clever fiddles – lightweight, cleverly designed, well made, and capable of making good music.
Like everything else in this fraught market, the price tag went up – his packages range from 355 to 550, depending on the wood choices (Poplar, Black Walnut, “Camelot” wood), the accessories, string decisions, the addition of a “classical chinrest, etc.
I’m selling this Wiplstix fiddle – with bow, battery powered tuner, Artino fiddle mute, screwdriver (for the tuning pegs), featherweight case – for $170 bucks.
That includes shipping.
The Wiplstix was a great instrument – it served me well during my effort to get the basics of fiddling - after 40 years of playing five string banjo. The Wiplstix let me continue to learn fiddling, confident that my early morning hours would not turn the population of our apartment community against me . . .
The Wiplstix was a show stopper – it caught the attention of folks, and prompted many questions. It’s sleek, carefully made, and shows up as an attractive piece of music making equipment.
I’m prepared to pass it on now. I’m a little more confident in my fiddling basics – maybe recklessly – so I’m prepared to shift to fully grown fiddles. That might be a blunder of strategic proportions, but I can always retreat to the comfort zone of an old-time banjo.
Again, $170 buys:
• The Whiplstix
• Bow
• Battery-powered tuner
• Artino mute
• Screwdriver for the inventive tuning pegs
• Featherweight case
Thanks for your attention.
Make great music,
Lew
