After a successful summer session, teaching at the Creative Strings Workshop in Ohio, I had 2 weeks to rest before hitting the skyways again with Bill Evans and Soulgrass. I've played so many shows this summer that it is hard to recollect where I've been. Last week, after a one-off in Norway, we flew back to the states to play the Falcon Ridge Folk Fest, and somewhere in Cleveland. After that, good friend Sam Bush joined us for a few days of hitting the road. Sam is one of the coolest musicians to hang out with and it was good to joke around and get to know him better. Having been a hero of mine for quite some time now, it is cool to sit down with him over a few beers and listen to his stories about everyone he knows in the bluegrass world. He likes to show us old videos of new Grass Revival in their heyday, and I like to make fun of his Patrick Swayze mullet....much to his discontent. After a great weekend with Sam, the Bill Evans band jetted back to Norway where we shared the roster with Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, Chris Potter, and Vinnie Calouta. I got to meet Herbie for the second time, and I was almost speechless. Just like Bela was into Chick for years, I was into Herbie Hancock! Herbie's show was, hands down, the best live show I have ever witnessed. I almost regret not getting any photos to post, but hanging with him was enough. The memories will last a lifetime, and luckily I got to hear him and Bill, longtime friends and bandmates, talk about what jazz legends talk about.....other jazz legends. Now I am in Toulouse, France getting ready to play the Marciac Jazz Festival. We are sharing the Bill with Brad Melhdau, Bireli Lagrene, Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall and a host of others. I'll try to get some pics! Hopefully they'll like banjo players.
