I learned to play banjo with my middle finger and since I couldn't seem to get the louder sound I wanted from it, recently learned to play with my index finger. Much more sound and control. It's been coming along quite nicely! I have always found it difficult to play with a pick, so changing fingers really helped.
Well, of course sod's law - I was building computers at work and both playing fingernails broke. GRRR. and I was going to a jam that night. I HAD to wear a pick or not be heard... I played with pick on, but it didn't go very well.
So NOW I am practicing daily with the pick on out of necessity, but I am sure in the long run, it's the best thing...
