.....comes together (so sayeth LCOL Hannibal Smith in "The A Team"). In my case, I love it when a BANJO comes together - specifically, when a tone ring refit (plus a new head just for the "clean" look) comes together.
Took the "Snowflake Special" apart one day last week when nothing else was on the agenda for the entire day; slightly modified the rim to eliminate the excessive looseness of the tone ring, reassembled everything, and it sounded fine after reassembly and even better after a slight head tweaking yesterday. Clean, solid, tone with plenty of "bottom end" and excellent response all the way up the neck, so nothing to really be concerned about at all. I'll let everything settle in for a couple of weeks and then re-check head tightness to make sure nothing is loose.
Practice continues apace. Age plus accidents involving my hands (like breaking my left wrist 5 years ago) have taken their toll, but regular exercise and concentrated effort - and some adjustments in technique - allow me to overcome or compensate for shortcomings. It's like my gym workouts, i.e., you have to keep after it on a steady, regular basis.
