As the 2nd installment of banjoist Ryan Cavanaugh's series of bluegrass/fusion inspired singles, "Back Country" takes the top off of of the banjo box and turns it upside-down. Now available on iTunes, Amazon Downloads, Napster, and other downloadable outlets, this internet only release is part of banjo player/artist/producer Ryan Cavanaugh's Back Country series, which also includes previously released "Reuben's Cube (Tribute to Earl Scruggs)."
"It is important to me to make new and exciting music with the banjo," says Cavanaugh. "I also want to release my ideas before they become old to me. There are no immediate plans for me to get a band together and play this material or to do a tour." Ryan's current recording/live project, Cult Classic, with vocalist and synthesist Leah Latella, is presently pumping out monthly tracks and playing live venues in their home base of New York City. www.cultclassicbeats.com
"With Cult Classic, I get to explore what it is to just be an electric musician and not a banjo player. It's a challenge for me and also very fun to use my banjo as a sonic paintbrush along with some of the amazing analog guitar effects they are making lately. I think the Back Country tracks are what led up to Cult Classic for me. I wanted to explore these 2 musical personalities simultaneously. It's not very often I get the chance to hire various members from the incarnations of Bill Evans's Soulgrass Group and go into the studio with them. I'm happy to have had the opportunity to document this phase of my playing in my own way. I've learned a whole lot from Bill Evans and his awesome band members."
The track lineup includes Ryan on electric banjo, Bill Evans on sax, Mark Egan on bass, Joel Rosenblatt on drums, and Tyson Rogers on keyboard.
