Take a look to the Jim Bottorff's site, there's some exercices to practice the tremolo.

Here's the way I hold the pick and a couple of sound clips to illustrate what it sounds like. http://www.banjoseen.com/banjotips.html and a short Video clip of me playing St. Louis Blues http://www.banjoseen.com/Video/1.html it my take some time to load. It basically shows how the tremolo looks when played.
