Are you a frustrated banjo player? Or, do you have a brand new banjo and are not sure what to do with it? Have you always wanted to learn old time banjo but never known where to start or whom to teach you? Here is a unique chance to make some big progress and learn how to play old time banjo with Andy Alexis, banjo player for the Piney Creek Weasels old time string band.

This class is especially suited for players who have felt unsuccessful at playing banjo in any style, such as bluegrass style or frailing. This class will focus on keeping a steady rhythm and playing tunes in G tuning and in double C tuning. We will learn chords to accompany singers and other instruments. We will learn how to use a capo. Slides, hammer-ons, and pull offs will be used to transform simple tunes into more complex sounding tunes. Ambitious banjo students will have the opportunity to join up with fiddlers from the beginning fiddle class and play a tune or two together. Although tab will be provided, memorization is a must, as it is the only way of making a tune your own.

In addition to learning old time banjo, elective classes will be offered to expand your musical knowledge. Evening concerts and dances by instructors and students will also be taking place.

Prerequisites: Participants should be able to play banjo a little, any style. You should know how to tune your banjo in G tuning. Bring your banjo(s), something to record music (tape/digital recorder, video camera, whatever!) and extra strings. Tabs will be provided.
