I can't remember if Art Rosenbaum's "Art Of The Mountain Banjo" had any Thumb Lead or not, but it is a great album with a lot of up-picked styles and the book is (I believe) in print, with a cd. At least I remember seeing it somewhere recently.

The Whiskey Before Breakfast variations and a few tunes in "F" tuning are now available on the web at:

Art Rosenbaum's Old Time Mountain Banjo has a tab transcription of Hills Of Mexico.

Old Smokey was in Old Time Herald some time back, as transcribed by Jody Stecher.

Try figuring it out yourself, it is not too hard. The melody lays out well both on the 3rd and 4th strings and an octave up on the 1st and 2nd strings.

Singing it is actually the hard part!

And there's a copy on eBay, or there was a couple days ago...

This is IMHO the best OT banjo book ever in print. As for finger style, it has stuff on thumb lead 2-finger, index lead 2-finger and OT 3 finger. I've had a copy for over 30 years and it's still next to my easy chair today. Worth whatever you have to pay for it.

I'll second (or third?) the recommendation of the Rosenbaum book. Everything is there for the obsessed person to figure out several forms of fingerpicking. Mine is also a tattered first edition though I think I got it around 1970.

Another essential banjo resource is Brad Leftwich's Round Peak Clawhammer Banjo. Though not aimed at fingerpickers, it's still a must have source for sparse, elegant versions of classic tunes. Sugar in the Gourd radio (www.sugarinthegourd.com), overseen by John Salmon, has been playing the Cd that accompanies Brad's banjo book --- there are usually a few inspiring examples up every day.
