Any advice on a coating for the fingernails to make them harder to give crisper intonation to the notes?

If you're playing CH that stuff scrapes off (coatings) pretty fast anyway. There are any number of dietary goodies that will make your nails harder. Try mixing a tablespoon of Knox gelatin In your next sody pop or tea or even coffee

For 5 bucks you can get an acryllic nail put on your frailin finger and not worry with it for 5-6 weeks. I've been doing that for 4 years and it works well.

Do I go to a nail place for the acrylic nail or any type of cvs/walgreens kind of place?

I have strong fingernails for clawhammer banjo...but when I started playing fingerstyle guitar and slide guitar I needed help with the beating the fingernails were taking. The best product I have found is Bella Naturale: http://storesonline.com/site/386121/product/7100B. Unlike regular acrylics this product doesn't mess up or thin out your fingernail. It also has a good, warm tone! I can apply it to my index and second finger myself.

I've been getting acrylic nails (index and middle) for a few years now and they work fine. I use the middle only for clawhammer and both for finger-style guitar. They're cheap enough that you can get them done regularly. In fact the place I go to often doesn't even charge me for a fill.

I have good luck with a layer of super glue. It protects from wear and strengthens the nail. Easy and quick.

I think eating cheese and drinking milk products helps to get strong nails. Milk contain Calcium which is an essential element in the nail.

I found a rebuttal of this idea at the MayoClinic web. I was going to add gelatin to my banjo smoothie] for harder nails, but I guess not...

I grow out my middle fingernail on my "claw" hand. When I'm not picking banjo, it doubles as a booger shovel.
