Just wondering how some of you play one of my favorite backup licks. It's usually on a D chord (key of G) with the notes AA F# E D. With the A being on the first string 19th fret. Earl plays it on the backup of Cabin in Caroline. I don't think I've ever seen it tab'd out. I do it 1/19 - 1/16 - 2/17 - 3/19 (first number is the string second the fret). Thanks

Rex

Here's what you wrote tabbed out:

19---19---16------------------------
-----------------17----------------
-----------------------19----------
---------------------------------

Don't have my banjo in front of me right now, so I can't pick it and see what it sounds like, but that's what it looks like in tab. I'll get the old banjo out later and see what it sounds like.

Does that help?

To me that just seems to be part of the lick.

It is just part of the lick. I'm looking for some alternate fingerings.

Rex, if it's the lick I'm thinking of,the usual way to play it is
19------------------------------------------ just hold an "F" chord shape at 19th
-----19----17------------------------------ and move your ring finger from 4th to 2nd
------------------18------------------------ string fret 19.
-------------------------19-----------------

to spice it up, you can do a hammer or slide from 3rd 17-18, and pick your first and second strings between notes, kinda like
19---------------19----------------------------
------19----17------------17------------------
----------------------17>18-------------------
-----------------------------------19-----------

Hope this helps,

I did try that "partial" lick on the banjo and then just tried the one above. I didn't think that what I posted was a complete phrase (although it could be, according to how you counted it). The second one posted above sounds complete and like a good lick to add to my list of licks. Thanks!

I just took another look at that lick and it's movable all over the neck -- so long as you have a 1st position chord (F shaped chord). Try it, it's fun!

Can't wait to get home to try this lick! I love a good moveable F shaped lick. So useful!

Thanks!

Yeah, I put in my first attempt at replying that it was a moveable lick, doesn't even use the 5th string.......but I hit the wrong key on the keyboard and lost it Next attempt I forgot to add that line

Rex
This is just one of a plethora of great Earl back-up livks that are basically extension ideas from arpeggios (using layers of chord tones to make licks). Here's how I would play this with the right hand:

-19------------------------------
----19--17----------------------
------------18-------------------
----------------19---------------
----------------------------------
_M_I__I__I__T___________

Some would opt to drop the thumb down for the 3rd string, but always found it easier to use the index in reversing a pattern like this.

Getting used to manuvering out of the "1" shape ( what some call the "F" shape) will yield a ton of great licks. Some include:

the "boogie woogie" lick: Here in G:

------17------------17---------/------
------------------15------------/------
----------15-16--------15-16-/------
--17----------------------------/17---
---------------------------------/------
__T__I__I_T_I__M__T_I___T____

Also, a bunch of pentatonic based/bluesy licks can be played out of the "1" shape: in G:

---15--17--15----------------------/------
-----------------17--15-------------/------
---------------------------17--15---/------
--------------------------------ck---/-17--
--------------------------------------/------

and rolling chord ideas too: in G:

--17-------17-------17------/-17-------17--------17-------/
-----15-----------15---------/----15-----------15-----------/
--------16--------------------/-------16----------------------/-etc........
-------------------------------/--------------------------------/
----------------16--------16-/---------------16--------16---/

the variations are endless and this sape is much more forgiing ,in terms of the left hane, than playing licks out of the "2" ("D") shape. This must be why there ar so many based on this, ya reckon?-
Alot of fun!

Bill Evans calls this lick „Six white horses“ lick. (if Im not wrong here)
Its pretty much the same as Banjophobic tabbed as boogie woogie lick.
