I've got two versions of this amazing tune - one with what sounds like about fifty fiddles from Mike Seeger and a more recent clawhammer version from Adam Hurt. I'd love to play this tune, but I can't seem to make it work in A standard or A modal. Anybody know how to play this on the banjo?

I play it in F tuning (fCFCD) usually capoed up to G - but that is where the capo normally sits. The tune works well in that particular tuning but since I don't know any fiddlers who do it (in my presence at least) I don't really know what key it is normally played in. I got it from the Hammons Family record and since they rarely played with other people they tended to tune to a good string tension rather than a specific pitch.
To play it in A using F tuning you would have to capo the banjo at the 4th fret for overall pitches of aEAEF#

The Whiskey Before Breakfast variations and a few tunes in "F" tuning are now available on the web at:

Konnichiwa,
I've not heard Adam's nor Mike's version. But I know this tune more than 20 years from Burl Hammons fiddling.
From fiddler's view, it's in the key of A, but not in high bass, high counter key(Cross tuning). Either standard key or just high bass.
If I play banjo along with fiddler at jam, I just go standard A tuning. After reading mcallise's post, I try to figure it out and came up with aDAC#E.
I will add recording of me play Shakin' Down the Acorns on my homepage. It's little rough since it's my first attempt of this tune.

The Fiddlers Companion lists two tunes by that name, one in D an t'other in A. You will have to scroll down a good bit (or search for Acorn) on that page. Being the fidlers companion, there isn't any help on banjo tuning.

Thanks for the recording, Bosco. That was very cool. I'll give it a shot in both the suggested tunings and see if I can make something respectable. I love this tune.

Dave Bing came through here last week for a fiddle workshop and taught my favorite fiddler to play Shakin' Down the Acorns. As soon as I can get her to hold still a second, I'll put up a recording. It's very different from the one here - who knew there were so many different versions of this obscure tune?

Works for me in G modal (or capo to A modal).
