Without seeing how you pick, it's hard to tell. I know when I first began I to would hit the head with my thumb pick. Two things that helped releave that was to work on my picking technique and be aware of how my thumb was striking the strings and then I went to an 11/16th bridge which gave me more clearence between the string and the head.
That and time seemed to clear up any problems hitting the head.

You could shorten the blade of the thumbpick.

I think we all start this way. I did, and it spontaneously disappeared after awhile. Sounded like I was working a snare drum in the early days...!

On a banjo mission...!

First trim the thumbpick blade and then concentrate on missing the head while practicing rolls (for a few days.) This should help. I think we've all had this problem from time to time.
