Hi all. When I got my 1928 TB3 conversion back in the 90s, it had an original (I assume) Grover Presto tailpiece that had two little tabs or feet that would rest on the rim. I don't see this often on old Prestos advertised, and wondered if anyone knew about it, or why they were sometimes used. I always figured they were to space the bridge correctly above the rim, but many folks just float the tailpiece above the rim anyway.
Sadly I traded that tailpiece for a more practical modern 5-string version years ago, not realising that more practical doesn't always mean more better ![]()

The Grover Presto with the “feet” was originally used with the grooved tension hoop. The outer edge of the groove was a bit lower than the inner and the feet rested here to give stability. When Gibson changed to the notched tension hoop they ground off the feet until Grover acquired a new dieset to produce Prestos without them.
