Another luthier hack or original??

ebay.com/itm/116976588779

This appears to have been Washburn banjeaurine as advertised in the catalog, but the neck is curious somehow. The headstock volute seems to be going the wrong way and the heel plate is suspicious.

Otherwise looks like a Washburn tension hoop and helmet style shoes, wrong neck brace, and unmarked dowel stick. Fingerboard looks like it got chopped from the 5th side.

Rather than a "custom" job, as it is always possible, I prefer to think that Johnny inherited Uncle Fred's old banjo around 1922, and to impress his friends and meet new people, he had it converted by the local handy dandy luthier to a 4 stringer. All his friends had told him that the 4 stringer, both ukes and tenor banjos, were hip, and 5 stringers were antique and old fashioned and out of style.

Very obvious that it is cut down from a 5 string neck.

Cut down banjorine. A real shame.

The volute turns up on some Lyon & Healy products and is original.
