Hanger-outers, I have a line on a possible Gibson from the 00s for sale. I suspect the seller is a guitar person so the details I have so far are sparse. I’m looking for some basic tips when looking at a Gibson from likely the early 2000s. I want to avoid accidentally buying a parts banjo with a Gibson neck.

Things like: is the serial number supposed to be stamped on the peg head? Is there a stamp or decal inside the pot? Any easy give aways on the tailpiece? How many plies should the pot have? What else?

Interestingly, it appears to be made from a blonde wood, which I’ve not seen on a Gibson. The inlays on the fretboard appears to be dots.

Also, I know 2000s is post Rich era. I’ve read that the post Rich era is hit or miss; are there common things I should be on the lookout for?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

Update/correction.
It’s not dots inlays; they are little crosses or flowers or something.
The fiddle style peg head says Gibson in old timey letters and has a single fleur de Lise.
The tailpiece looks pretty flat and has Gibson printed on the side.
The wood looks like curly maple, though I’m not an expert.
There does not appear to be a number on the back of the peg head.

Gibsons of that vintage have serial numbers (Factory Order Numbers FONs) stamped inside the rim. Not on back of peghead.

Should be a gold sticker with black border saying Gibson Nashville TN and not much else.

We need photos of front, back, sides and inside.

You're correct that it is rare to find a blonde factory Gibson. One that I can think of from roughly this time period is the reboot of the Style 1 -- it had blonde finish and very simply little inlays. One version of the Style 1 then had a tone ring, the other did not. An important difference to the value.

Does it look this RB Deluxe from a classified ad here on BHO?  This is the one I mentioned above, with no tone ring.  Not "exactly" an RB 1, but sort of.

The banjo described is an RB or RB deluxe which were introduced as a step below the RB250. They are both maple with natural finish with snowflake like inlay and fluehr de lis on peg head. Difference is that the deluxe has a tone ring and is pretty much the same design as the other higher end mastertones from that period, with less cosmetic detail . The RB (non deluxe) does not have a tone ring. Whatever the case may be, make sure you are not paying tone ring type prices for a non tone ring banjo.

Be very careful on Gibson named banjos and their parts. So many copy banjos have been made now with the Gibson name inlaid on the fingerboards and headstocks plus having correct looking resonators and neck patterns. Also rims, tone rings, and other parts have been swapped around on original Gibson products. I’d just say buyer beware. But if you like it and the price is good go for it.
