I have a 1923 Vega Tubaphone 11 13/16" rim with a Wyatt Fawley neck in very good condition, and a Calton case. I need to sell it, but don't really know what to ask for it. Does anyone have any thoughts on a fair price?

My opinion, without knowing all the minutiae about the banjo, is that you should be able to get at least $2,500 with the Calton case.

Thanks acasseday.

I respectfully disagree. For all Fawley’s skill, it’s still a non-original neck. The head diameter may affect value too. Pre-war Tubbys don’t bring what they used to. I would say around $2,000-$2,350.l

Thank you Bill.

It also depends on who installed the neck. Wyatt assembled and sold complete instruments, which were well put together, but also sold unfinished necks for others to install. Of the latter, I've seen some fairly botched and poorly finished banjos.

Wyatt liked to use a 22 fret clear 26" scale on his Vega style necks without regards to the pot size. Many felt that this put the bridge too close to the center. Nice if you like a warm, tubby sound as some do.

Vega used a 20 fret clear 28" scale on these that put the bridge in a more desirable location.
