My Kerschner Unique Tailpiece has two broken string holder screws, do they unscrew, and if so
in what direction?

I believe they're pressed in, not screwed.

They are not screws, so do not unscrew.

If they are pressed in, then using a pin punch, you should be able to tap them out with a hammer. Not sure what you would replace them with unless someone has a broken (snapped) TP and could supply you with some.

Someone used this tailpiece to hold ball end strings without widening the slots first.

I suppose that one could punch or drill out the broken pins and rob a repro NoKnot for replacements but that's a lot of trouble to go through. The broken pins will hold loop end strings just fine. I would leave it alone.

I have a couple of vintage Kershners missing the adjusting screws. Can't find the correct nickel plated Fillister head screws anywhere but I was able to find stainless steel which is close enough. I'll be charging $2 apiece plus postage as soon as I can find the right padded envelopes. PM me if interested or wait till I post pictures in the Classifieds.

Thanks, yes the tailpiece holds loop end strings just fine. I imagine there are a lot Kerschner tailpieces that
have one end of the slotted string holders broken off.

If you look on the underside you'll see that those string pins are held tight to the tailpiece by being hammered/pressed into a flat star shape. (Like an old time hot rivet maybe?)  It would be pretty hard to get them out without worse breakage.

You can use loop end strings on your tailpiece with no problem.
