So far more than 100 people think that is a great price and ordered one. It is American made and well worth it. Do you believe in supporting American makers?

Delightful! I think I like the "sawblade" flange the best.
No this isn't something I'd buy...but I can appreciate the chutzpah it takes to market something like this.
Hmmm. String it with nylon...take it to the ABF October Rally and play Halloween tunes. Perfect! ![]()

Yeah, Halloween is coming. One can never be too careful.

Since I was a teenager I've wanted a "Satanic" themed banjo, I even have some sketches I did when I was 18/19 and still trying to play "bluegrass"
Pentagram dot inlays, sigil at the 5th, Baphomet inlay on the peghead, some sort of devil horn peghead shape... then I remember that I like playing classic era banjos. So I've not had one made.

Do you believe that being an American company means people cannot comment upon or critique your products?
tdennis - Posted - 09/10/2025: 16:38:40
Even having a "banjo theme" strikes me as inane. (Does that mean you might have a predilection for "Frankenbanjos" ??
Joel Hooks - Posted - 09/10/2025: 16:44:26
This is kinda a relaunch and not exactly “new”, I think they did this like 10 years ago.
the-fish - Posted - 09/10/2025: 18:03:28
I don’t understand this post
This all seems very very yesterday?
trapdoor2 - Posted - 09/10/2025: 18:49:42
Well, this is "III", so I assume at least two predecessors. You can find "II" models online at various dealers...but they don't look as good as the "III", IMNSHO. They're red, the reso is kind of a dirty wash. The rust and blood spatter of the "III" beats the "II" all hollow.
the-fish - Posted - 09/10/2025: 21:12:42
Well a link or a post as reference would be nicer than a bunch of old 10+ year old comments someone “dug up”
Nothing current I see, I don’t even see a II and 1 sold poorly with most dealers hating the. But forced to receive them
I actually would have an interest in see the differences and a new version. Should they exist
banjoy - Posted - 09/11/2025: 03:51:08
I enjoy the saw blade flange too, that's a nice touch. And Jens Kruger playing the music in your promotional video, ditto. But I thought banjo was scary enough on its own merits ... you're gonna give people banjo phobias or something, maybe make a movie or something. Or a cartoon. Scary.
itsnotyou - Posted - 09/11/2025: 05:50:56
Well I am very much a traditional type banjo person. So its not my style, but I also would never go to a Comic Con convention. Tens of Thousands of people go to Comic Con every year and this would be a style that they would probably love.
I see that this is a made to order banjo, so i don't think anyone is having them forced on them.
I feel Deering is making banjos appealing to a group that may never have considered owning a banjo. Look at guitars that have the same types of style.
I think it is great that a manufacturer is not only building banjos an old traditional guy like me likes but also reaching out to the style younger people may enjoy. Who knows the kid that buys a Zombie Killer today may be up on stage 40 years later playing one of banjos we wish we could own today.
They will be laughing at themselves like we are about how we dressed and looked 50+ years ago.
the-fish - Posted - 09/11/2025: 06:02:41
In regards to “forced to” it was explained to me that while a dealer mostly has control of their preferred inventory, in some cases such as this it and some others were just sent , part of the deal
This was a reputable and still is a reputable dealer, of which I am not
I’m simply stating what I was told and was offered a HUGE deduction because the store owner hated seeing it in his wall everyday
Joel Hooks - Posted - 09/11/2025: 06:24:28
Also not for me, but I think it is cool and wish them a profitable return.
I am a horror fan, but I lean more gothic horror. Now, gothic banjos I could get behind, skulls, bats, spiders, skeletons, spiderwebs, that is my kind of thing.
localhost - Posted - 09/11/2025: 06:35:21
I enjoy the obscure, the oddballs, and the misfit toys in the world so totally absolutely I love this banjo. I hope you sell a ton!
KCJones - Posted - 09/11/2025: 07:11:57
The Deering Goodtime is without question the best $350 banjo you can buy.
banjopaolo - Posted - 09/11/2025: 08:03:51
Being Italian I support Italian maker Scorpion Banjos, btw they don’t build such kind of instruments!

Here's something for several of you to ponder: How ‘bout if you don’t have something nice to say, say nothing. You know, like your parents taught you.

My parents taught me that over and over again. You are right Steve, that is good advice and would make the HangOut more enjoyable to read and participate in. Negativity chases people away.
This is the third time we have done a run of the Zombie Killers. The second iteration of it. I am glad you like the rust powder coat. I work in the factory now and that is one of the jobs I do, along with Propik. I am busier than ever which is why I rarely have time to come to the Hangout.
My comment about American Makers is referring to when price is the only measure and we are in a country with required minimum wages, only buying on price leaves you with used products or foreign made products where they pay very low labor rates. Price should not be the only measure as it makes it impossible for American makers.
We are dedicated to making banjos at the most affordable rates, but cannot put ourselves out of business by trying to match lower expectations. So we compete on quality, giving the most banjo for the lowest possible price.
However, you will see come increases coming soon so if you want the lowest price, I suggest that you buy now.

People are allowed to criticize.
You don't get to use a vague statement (..."if you don't have anything nice to say") to quiet voices you don't want to hear.
..."you will see come increases coming soon so if you want the lowest price, I suggest that you buy now." Great marketing.
ps, you typoed/spelled 'preppers' wrong in the thread title

Yeah....take this to a jam session and it's really cool and interesting for about 5 seconds!
And then you wake up one day and realize you simply must get rid of this lovely thing.....LOL

If im directed at one of those, being told to listen to parents I advise you to do the same and keep your yapper shut
You know what happens when one assumes something
I do have interest, I did have interest, I did look up to try and find out what this post was referring too
I think it was pretty cool for Deering to step out of the box a bit and offer something of fun and whimsy
Wish I had funds to get one but didn’t
Hoped a resurgence existed to add it as a possibility , appears not
Assume all you want , you don’t know what you think you know about another’s thoughts
My parents taught me that too

I've seen people asking where to buy the older versions of these on the used market, because they can be pretty hard to find.
In my opinion this is by far the best looking iteration.

Agreed. I wanted the OG version pretty bad a while back and this one goes harder.
I play a lot of the Left 4 Dead and Killing Floor game series which are zombie shooters and this could totally be a melee weapon in the games. Every swing is a twang, every zombie kill a sloppy banjo rif. Gonna throw a pic in our gaming discord, I'm curious if any of my zombie slayer friends play the banjo haha.

I love this design! I almost bought one of the previous versions since it has a quirky cool vibe, but no truss rod in a $1400 instrument is a hard pass.
I had a Goodtime Tenor banjo that was nothing but trouble. The neck finally became unplayable and I stripped it down and used it for expensive firewood since Deering refused to do anything about it at the time - in warranty too. (I own over forty string instruments including banjos, mandolins, acoustic and electric guitars, violins, and others. My studio has tight temperature and humidity controls too.) The Goodtime is the only one that has failed me. I owned a music store that sold Goodtime before my health failed so I've been a fan in the past.
I didn't post this to trash Deering. This is just my experience on why I won't buy another Goodtime.
I own a Vega Long Neck and a Vega Senator that have been stellar. I will pick up another Vega someday, and Deering has been great with any questions in the past.
I don't know who does the Goodtime customer service, but they were awful compared to my Vega experiences. Cheap instruments are a gateway to better ones and taking shortcuts like no truss rod doesn't create raving fans. Lousy customer service for cheap lines doesn't create repeat business either. So many companies no longer care about repeat buyers now.
I bought the Goodtime because of my great Vega experiences. I know I can't expect that quality in a cheap tenor banjo, but my cheap knock around Gretsch is still playing great after fifteen years, and it was less than a quarter of the price of the Goodtime. I surely thought Goodtime was made better than a cheap import.

Janet,
Interesting banjo. Kudos for your company's creativity. I hope you sell out and they become highly collectible. Thank you for making your products in America. I appreciate it very much.
Unfortunately the BH has far to many participants that need to flame other posters. Its the reason why I did not renew my membership and it is only getting worse here, sorry to say. Sign of the times. Take care.

Zombies are fictional monsters that got very popular in TV shows and movies around the 2010's. The zombies try and kill all living things, and so while defending yourself from them the zombie blood often got everywhere.
If a person in the show or movie had a banjo they carried around as they tried to avoid zombies and survive it would for sure end up with zombie blood splattered all over it, and Deering used that as the inspiration for the theme of this banjo.

I'm guessing the inspiration was from Woody Harrison's scene in the film Zombieland where he uses a cheap banjo to smash zombies.

Interesting, shows a real attention to detail/commitment to the theme.
Is this my cup of tea? Well not really but I have no doubt a lot of people would love this thing.
And I'm all for any banjo maker trying something different, if it makes someone pick one up and play it who never would have done otherwise then great! That's exactly what we need.
