I’m a Scruggs style banjo player, but I currently play for my church worship team and I was seeking advice on how to approach modern contemporary worship music.
Some songs are in a bluegrass style which is easy to pick but most are not so I was curious if anyone had any advice on types of rolls, filler licks etc to better fit into a worship setting.
Examples of songs we’d play would be: Open the Gates by vertical worship, 1,000 names by Phil wickham, you’ve already won etc

I’ve played in church a couple times. The worship leader wanted to play King Of Heaven by Paul Baloche and Absent From Flesh by Sojourn Music and asked if I would learn them. Both of these already have banjo in them, but maybe you can listen to them and get an idea of how they used it in contemporary music. These are definitely not the straight up bluegrass songs I enjoy playing. I’m not a great banjo player but I listened to them and figured it out.

Hi. I also accompanied the banjo during Worship. And the others liked the inclusion of the banjo.
But I'm from the Czech Republic, so I played Czech songs. And the lineup was also 1-2 rhythm guitars (and sometimes a cajon).
So in that case I played on the banjo what an electric guitar would otherwise play. To get directions on how to play, I found it helpful to search for "worship leader guitar" on the internet..
My way of playing. No rolls, but single strings. Quiet dynamics. Long tones. Sometimes an arpeggio chord. I tried to create "atmosphere or color".
